Product Overview

  • This is designed to deliver a super smooth cast. This smoothness is a key feature of the remarkable design – it helps to calm the reel and keeps you in the loop throughout the cast cycle with feedback that almost seems uncanny. Connect and haul. It all seems so easy. It has taken some considerable time to perfect and incorporates all Century’s resources including Autoclave Technology, Gearbox Design and years of experience on the beach, custom mandrels, the latest electric rolling tables and more than a little attention to detail.
  • The Kompressor S is the great all rounder and you do not need to be a mighty pendulum warrior to get results. An easy action in the tip focused into a progressive Gearbox butt allows you to access the power zones and release the stored energy at your discretion rather than the rods. Ideal for heavy to mixed ground with the occasional excursion into less demanding conditions: never forget that a medium to powerful rod can always fish shingle shores and medium tidal streams – as well as the heavy stuff but this is not true in reverse. Flexibility is king for an angler that explores.

Overall Rating
Century has a reputation for producing top-quality performance rods. Roger Mortimore, TSF's answer to Top Gear's ‘The Stig', was sent to a deserted beach to test the Kompressor S. The Kompressor S Sport is a slim rod built using the latest autoclave technology and years of experience. Century uses custom mandrels, the latest electric rolling tables and great attention to detail to ensure that every rod meets its exacting standards. The rod is 13 feet 10 inches long and is designed to be an all-rounder to cope with all casting styles. It has a very smooth action with a tip that will show bites from small fish but loads progressively through to the ‘gearbox' butt where the power is stored. There are eight Fuji BNHG guides secured with black whipping thread and a Century sliding reel seat that allows you to use the reel in your favourite position. One great idea is the short lengths of Japanese shrink tubing at the top of the butt section and bottom of the tip, which gives you excellent grip when it's cold and wet and makes it easy to pull the rod apart. It is supplied with its own custom-made, high-quality rod bag complete with strap so you can carry it slung over your shoulder. The overall appearance of the rod is kind of basic; this is because it is built to perform rather than for posing with, as I was about to find out during our test. I was sent to a deserted beach in Suffolk with strict instructions to treat the rod the same way that ‘The Stig' off television's Top Gear drives a car – flat out! Down on my deserted beach I clamped a reel into the sliding reel seat and locked it into my chosen position, which gave me an active length of 13 feet from the reel to the rod tip. As the rod is rated to cast 125g to 200g, I rigged up with a single-hook, clipped-down rig loaded with bait and a 200g Breakaway lead. I stood on the top of the shingle bank and used a flat-style pendulum to gently tee up the lead behind me, then turned into the cast, pulling the rod around my body with a big smack at the end. The rod had an incredibly smooth action during the cast and the recovery was crisp, even with a 200g lead on the end. I know this rod has already cast over 250 metres on the field, so it certainly has plenty of potential. Sat in the rest the tip curved nicely in the tide and clearly showed bites from whiting that were only just sizeable. Having fished with the rod for several hours and giving it plenty of stick, it came out with flying colours; cast after cast its performance was faultless. Summing up I found it very easy to get on with. It didn't bite back even when I gave it maximum wind-up and it showed bites well – basically everything we need from a fishing rod.
